Earlier this month, R. Kelly‘s 14-year-old, Jaya, reportedly came out as transgender
and changed his name to Jay. Though he hadn’t spoken public on the news
in the time since, Kells tread lightly about the subject in a recent
interview with 107.5 WGCI in Chicago.
“You don’t really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming
my son,” he said. “Don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit.”
He seemed to treat the reports more like rumor than truth, despite the fact that Jay has been open about the transition on his Ask.fm account.
“Always believe what you see, with your own eyes, that is,” the
singer continued. “Always believe what you see. That’s the best way to
go about this business. I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of
people. It was never true.”
As his answer progressed, Kells mentioned that he sold his house so that he could save money and live in a more modest one.
“You save money so your kids can go to college — no matter what they
are or who they are,” he said. “They’re still your kids; you love ‘em,
you gotta support them…At the end of the day, it’s not about me no more.
It’s about three lovely, lovely kids that I’m in love with and that’s
in love with me.”
